Abseiling Cala Goloritzé \ Punta Salinas , Abseiling

Cala Goloritzé Trekking | Ogliastra, Sardinia

Our hike to Cala Goloritzé starts at Su Porteddu, above the village of Baunei, where a large supervised car park makes for an easy departure.

We head up to Punta Salinas along a classic mule track, winding through low, fragrant Mediterranean scrub. At the top, the reward is immediate: a breathtaking panoramic view over the Gulf of Orosei — the kind of view that will haunt you on grey winter days back home.

Far below, you’ll spot Cala Goloritzé and its iconic sea stack, one of the most recognizable rock formations in Sardinia. In the warmer months, that turquoise water is an open invitation for a refreshing swim.

Back at the car park, a well-equipped kiosk is waiting — the perfect place to unwind after the trail.

The Punta Salinas ridge can also be reached via a second trekking route — a more open trail with little shade and no water sources along the way. For this reason, we recommend it in spring or autumn, when temperatures are cooler and the landscape is at its most vivid.

Along the path, you’ll come across a series of cuiles and pinnettos — the ancient stone shelters used by Sardinian shepherds for centuries. Each one is built in the same timeless way: a conical roof of wooden beams set on a circular dry-stone base. Simple, sturdy, and completely in harmony with the land around them.

Standing beside one of these shelters, it’s hard not to wonder what life must have been like for the men who spent days and weeks alone out here, in one of the most rugged and isolated corners of the Mediterranean. Tough, quiet, and deeply connected to this land — much like Ogliastra itself.

The Punta Salinas and Cala Goloritzé area is one of the most celebrated corners of the Supramonte di Ogliastra — and it’s easy to see why.

The starting point sits on the Golgo plateau, set back from the coast and easily reachable by car. From here, a whole range of trekking and abseiling routes fans out across the landscape, suitable for different fitness levels and experience. A rare kind of place where beginners and seasoned adventurers can explore the same territory.

But none of that would matter without what nature put here first. The scenery is built from just three ingredients — limestone, sea, and Mediterranean scrub — and somehow the result is extraordinary. The kind of landscape that overwhelms the senses and stays with you long after you’ve left.

Here, the old debate between mountain lovers and sea lovers simply dissolves. Standing on these cliffs, looking down at that water, nobody is keeping score. There is only the shared, slightly stunned feeling of being somewhere genuinely beautiful.

This excursion is open to anyone aged 12 and over, but some previous abseiling experience is required before you join.

The technical skills needed are moderate — this isn’t a course for complete beginners, but it’s well within reach for anyone who has already spent time on a rope. The real challenge is physical: the route demands sustained effort, and on a warm day that effort adds up quickly.

Come prepared: bring plenty of water, dress in breathable layers, and don’t underestimate the heat. In Ogliastra, even a mild spring afternoon can feel very different once you’re out on exposed limestone with no shade.
