Abseiling Canyon Gorropu Canyoning | Urzulei, Ogliastra

The Canyon of Gorropu starts in Urzulei, a small village in the heart of the Supramonte and one of Sardinia’s most beloved destinations for trekking and outdoor adventure.

This is a top-to-bottom canyoning route through one of Europe’s deepest and most dramatic gorges. Before you set off, your guide will kit you out with everything you need: climbing helmet, harness, and all technical gear.

From there, the descent begins. Your certified guides will lead you through a series of obstacles using fixed ropes, steel cables, and abseil stations, threading a path between towering limestone walls and down along the course of the Rio Flumineddu. Every turn reveals something new — raw rock, rushing water, and silence so deep it feels alive.

And there’s a surprise waiting underground. If you’re up for it, we’ll hand you a wetsuit and take you to a stunning hidden underground lake tucked inside the canyon. Dive in, float around, and take a moment to realise where you are.

Gorropu is often called the deepest canyon in Europe — but let’s set the record straight. What it truly is, is something far more interesting than a superlative.

This is a gorge of extraordinary walls, a vertiginous slot canyon that twists through the limestone in impossibly tight bends. At its most dramatic point — between the bed of the Rio Flumineddu and the summit of Punta Cucuttos — the vertical drop approaches 500 metres. You don’t need a world record to feel small here.

Gorropu was first explored with ropes back in the 1960s — a reminder that this place has been drawing adventurers long before adventure tourism had a name.

The Gorropu gorge is an absolute must for trekking enthusiasts in Sardinia. But what 25miglia offers goes a step further.

This is the full traverse of the canyon — a complete top-to-bottom crossing along a secured and guided route that still keeps its edge. This isn’t a walk in the park. It asks something of you — and that’s exactly the point.

Give it everything you’ve got. And don’t worry about the return journey: if you need it, we’ll arrange a 4×4 transfer to bring you back in complete comfort. All you have to do is enjoy the ride.

The Gorropu canyon traverse is open to participants aged 12 and over, but this one comes with clear requirements.

You’ll need prior experience with technical outdoor activities of this kind — this is not the right route for a first-timer. Equally important is excellent physical fitness: the gorge demands stamina, focus, and a genuine willingness to be challenged.
